The traditional toss bouquet, when caught, tells one lucky receiver little more than that she will be the next to wed. But this distinctive toss bouquet is made up of a cluster of smaller bouquets, each bearing its own secret fortune that offers more detailed information about future husbands to a few agile guests. We used roses, calla lilies, and ranunculuses.
For a sophisticated bride, a sheaf of miniature white calla lilies is a good option. Flat on top and tapered at the bottom, the bouquet is designed so the stems make as strong a statement as the blossoms. The flowers are bound with a rubber band that is covered by a 1 1/2-inch-wide length of grosgrain. Folded into a flat bow, it is secured with a button covered in the same ribbon. The stems are cut at a 45-degree angle.
This bouquet has a variety of textures and colors, thanks to the mix of muscari (grape hyacinth), lamb's ear, lily of the valley, andromeda, helleborus, thyme, rosemary, sage, and scented-geranium foliage.
To make an autumn or winter bouquet even more lush, include cockscomb -- the deep-pink ruffle-edged flower here -- and then highlight its rich texture with a thick velvet-ribbon bouquet wrap. This example contains calla lilies, sweet pea, and cockscomb in shades of pink.
With a few vibrant splashes of color, a white cascade exudes an exotic splendor. Tropical yellow-and-pink cattelaya orchids punctuate ivory clouds of lisianthius and sweet peas. Lithe gloriosa lilies enliven the bouquet.
Shiny fabric leaves (actually appliques snipped from a ribbon) transform a classic white assortment into a glamorous wintry display. The wired leaves frame one edge of the cone-shaped bouquet and are mixed in among fresh flowers -- miniature calla lilies, scabiosa, delphinium florets, and lilies-of-the-valley. Sterling-silver beads on wire stems are also inserted here and there. Sequined ribbon forms a band around the stems, and tendrils of silver ribbon drift over it.
Perfect for a winter wedding, 'Casablanca' lilies, some a hand-span wide, are wired into a plump and ruffled lily "ball" and intermixed with 20 silver-mesh leaves, some of which drift onto its silvery ribbon.
This compact oval cascade is lively with fiery hues. Cheerful little narcissus with orange centers dance among freckled vanda orchids, red-striped roses, and deep-orange gloriosa lilies with buttery edges. Young gloriosa blooms with their still-green petals provide contrast.
Bouquets inspired by the tuxedo's colors are elegant and surprising. An armful of white flowers, including 'Majolica' spray roses, lily of the valley, ranunculus, freesia, lisianthus, and sweet peas, is bound with a black-and-white sash tied in a grand bow.
For a free-form effect, flowers and foliage are hand-wired together: 'Pink Prominence' lilies, amaryllis, green and speckled phalaenopsis orchids, pink dendrobium, dusty pink calla lilies, euphorbia, honeysuckle foliage, and string-of-beads.
Both the miniature calla lilies and the ranunculuses display touches of pink and green in this fan-shape bouquet, which is romantic yet still modern. The layered ribbons -- an inch-wide checked grosgrain over a broad band of silk grosgrain -- play up the soft blush of the flowers.
This clutch of shapely blooms in tones of cream and white recalls a Victorian posy while befitting a modern bride. The taupe ribbon of silk satin brings out the soft caramel tones of the calla lilies and tulips; papery sweet peas lend a blousy feeling, and anemones, with their black centers, add contrast.
This slender clutch of miniature calla lilies has elegance to spare. Each hood is streaked with shades of lavender. The long, graceful stems are cuffed with a dusky-purple taffeta ribbon held in place with four lavender glass-topped floral pins.
The bright whites of grape hyacinths, papery sweet peas, and pearl-like lilies of the valley look even fresher when paired with green-and-white hellebores and fritillarias with their graceful tendrils. This featherweight nosegay has a just-picked charm and a delicate perfume. Its ribbons -- scalloped faux suede over grosgrain -- are trimmed with a dotted button.
