Grandstand: A Place for Your Wedding Cake

Martha Stewart Weddings, Summer 2008

Although modern wedding cakes come in every shape, size, and flavor (vegan chocolate anyone?), the stands that support them have mostly stayed in the bland category. Why not break the mold and create your own? It'll be a piece of cake!

Tools and Materials
1/2-inch-thick plywood
Paint and paintbrush
Drill and screwdriver
4 knobs with screws
Hot-glue gun
Ribbon and silk flowers

How-To
The hardware store you buy the plywood from will cut it into a square (or rectangle) of any size; for a circle, you'll need the help of a woodworker with a jigsaw. Paint, and let dry. Drill holes for knobs and attach. Cover edge of board by hot-gluing on ribbons and tucking stems of flowers underneath before glue sets.
