Woodland Cakes: Snowy Pinecones

Fondant that has been tinted ice blue blankets this cake, like snow in the shadows cast by a winter sun. Real pinecones flocked with royal icing and glistening with sanding sugar are accented with finely wrought chocolate pine needles; they add a natural-looking texture to the cake's modern lines.

How do you plan to make the pine cone needles? I am stumped. I'm planning to make this cake in January.

This cake is beautiful. My daughter is getting married and will have a similar cake. Where do you find the pinecones?

My daughter-in-law-to-be love this cake and I am going to make it for her winter wedding. I wonder how will I make " finely wrought chocolate pine needles" that hold up and don't bend once thay are on the cake. Please help!
