The Roles of the Parents

Martha Stewart Weddings, Winter 2001

When the credits roll at the end of a film, they clearly indicate the many people who brought the show to life. Producing a wedding takes an equally coordinated effort, although the team is much smaller. The bride, groom, parents, and stepparents, if any, must produce, script, direct, and star in one of life's most fantastic dramas. To make it run smoothly, a traditional list of tasks has evolved for each player. Of course, the bride and groom make the final decisions and are the biggest stars to appear on their wedding day. But both sets of parents have essential, and in some cases lengthy, lists of tasks for the big event.
