How-To

Paper Dahlia

Even if it's not dahlia season just yet, you can still channel this flower's intense color and festive attitude here and now.

For these eye-catching favor pouches, we used bright tissue paper to create a pattern that mimics that bold beauty, then tied on a tag bearing planting instructions, and verdant ribbon to pose as leaves. At home, guests will peel back the petals to reveal a dormant dahlia bulb brimming with potential and just waiting to take root.

Tools and Materials:

Paper Dahlia How-To:

  1. Download the PDF of our dahlia template, and print onto standard printer paper. Cut out template; then lay on top of folded tissue paper, aligning straight edges of template with the two folded edges of the tissue paper. Trace lightly around the template, and then cut on the line to create a tissue-paper dahlia. Open tissue paper and rotate top sheet slightly so the petal tips are staggered.
  2. Wrap the bulb in another layer of tissue paper, and place it in the center of the tissue-paper dahlia. Wrap the tissue-paper dahlia around the bulb, drawing the sides up and to the center; secure with string (leave ends long for now).
  3. To make the tags, download the PDFs of both the initials tag and the planting-instructions tag.
  4. For the initials tag, type in your first initials and wedding date. Print onto 8 1/2-by-11-inch card stock.
  5. For the planting-instructions tag, print onto card stock.
  6. Using a 1 1/2-inch circle craft punch, punch out each tag. (Turn the craft punch upside down, so you can see the positioning of the design in the hole of the punch.)
  7. Place an initials tag on top of an instructions tag, and use a small hole punch to make a hole through the top center of both tags.
  8. Thread string through the holes and tie; trim ends.
  9. Wrap a pretty ribbon around to cover up the string, and tie.

I don't think she mentions azaleas as the bulb to use. I think that was the color of the paper the bulb is dahlia fower for wrapping.

To beseme0001- azaleas are shrubs, not bulbs. I think if you went looking for azalea bulbs you would not find them. However, there are so many bulbs you could use and your idea of raising money for ACS is wonderful. Your post was almost a year ago so it would be wonderful to post how your money raising effort went. Kudos to you! As a cancer patient I would love to say thank you for your dedication to people who are dealing with this horrible disease.

I'm going to use Daffodil bulbs in place of the azalea bulbs to raise money for the American Cancer Association. I thought this was a great way to honor my mother on the special day.

kmdahl I printed out the initial tags. The print in RED. Your printer may be out of RED ink. I don't know if the color on the template can be changed. If you print on the best setting of your printer they look alright. mmlmom

I'm having trouble printing off the pdf file. When I put our initials and date in, take it to the printers, it comes off as blank. Any hints on how to save the file correctly so I can get it printed?

I'm an event planner and made these for my event team as a thank you! I found a Lindt outlet store and bought individual Lindt chocolate balls. I used the balls to replace the bulbs and they were a HUGE hit! Thanks for posting this!

I love this idea. My wedding is this summer so I am thinking that I may just package flower seeds since it won't really be bulb planting season. Very cute, but the cutting involved is time consuming so get some help from your bridal party. : )
