Dresses That Inspire: Still Life

Martha Stewart Weddings, Fall 2001

Dramatic pocket draping in light-as-a-feather satin culminates in a swagged bustle and chapel-length train; the pocket is overflowing with large silk poppies. This silk mikado ball gown has a classic silhouette; its scoop neckline is hand-embroidered with raffia flowers and mirror-backed crystals. A pale blue underskirt in peau-de-soie silk peeks out beneath a ribboned silk taffeta overskirt in antique green; hoop skirts lend volume to the skirt, which is topped with a bodice appliqued with Calais lace and gold thread. A blue satin ribbon cascades down the back of this Como satin gown, which has a Basque waist and full box-pleated skirt. Alencon lace embellishes the bodice and hem of this sumptuous, flowing, ivory gown; each appliqued lace rosebud contains three Austrian crystals.
