The Best Hold for Your Hair

Martha Stewart Weddings, Summer 2003

The right finishing products can help keep your wedding-day do in place and looking beautiful. Base your choice on your hair's cut, texture, and style (our guide can help). Combine two or more products to achieve the desired effect and an extra degree of hold.

Gel
Use
For looser, more natural-looking hairstyles; to help control flyaways and frizz.

Expert Tip
Mix in a drop of silicone-based hair serum (antifrizz or shine) to keep gel from becoming flaky.

Pomade
Use
To add smoothness and shine to updos, chignons, and ponytails, and to control pulled-back areas.

Expert Tip
Work a dollop between hands, then run palms lightly over the crown of the head.

Wax
Use
Provides hold for short, "piecey" styles and curls while adding definition and shine.

Expert Tip
Soften a dab between fingers; starting with bottom layers, gently pull fingers through curls.

Spray
Use
To set any hairstyle. Use a light- or medium-hold spray, and mist on light layers for a strong hold.

Expert Tip
Spray from a distance equal to the can's height: Hold a 12-inch can 12 inches from hair.
