Folded Heart Save-the-Date How-To and Clip Art

Martha Stewart Weddings, Winter 2011

These cards unfold to reveal a weekend's worth of activities, which makes them ideal for weddings with multiple events.

Tools and supplies:

  • 8 1/2-by-11-inch letter-weight paper in cream or white
  • Computer with printer
  • Bone folder
  • Straightedge
  • Scissors
  • 5-by-5-inch envelope,

Basic How-To:

Download the PDF in the color of your choice: green, orange, peach, or rust. Print the first page (the outside of the card) on one side of the paper. Then update the text in the boxes on the second page (the inside of the card); don't worry if some of the boxes look funny as you type; once you click on the next box, the text will pop into the proper position. Print this page on the other side of the paper.

1. Using a bone folder and straightedge, score all the way across each sheet, following the dotted lines. Fold the paper along the score marks, and press creases; then unfold.

2. Bring left and right hearts to the back to meet along crease. Collapse top and bottom.

3. Flip to the "xo" side, and cut along the blue lines only (this ensures that the hearts stay attached).

Is "letter-weight paper" the same as paper that we use in the photocopier? Or is this a special type of paper?

Is it possible to remove the days of the week on each heart?

You can download a trial version of Adobe Photoshop. Open the saved pdf using Photoshop and hit ctrl u. This will open up a slider type color changing application. Slide the bars around until you get the color you want, and then save it. I did that and made these my wedding invitations :)

I absolutely adore these save the dates!! The only problem is we are having a dark purple themed wedding. Is there anyway different colors can be posted? Also, is it possible to remove the days of the week? Thank you so much in advance... can't wait to have these as part of our wedding!!!

Another thing we discovered--be sure your version of Adobe Reader is up to date--it's free to download. You might also consider restarting your computer and trying again.

From Talley Sue Hohlfeld, managing editor

Don't worry if the text boxes suddenly look funny once you click on them and start typing. (The Friday and Sunday pages especially are annoying; when you click on the box, Adobe Reader will turn them so that you can see the letters right side up--but they'll be very skinny.)

Once you click on the *next* box, the type will pop into the box you just finished, turned the proper way and everything.

(We'll add a line to the directions.)

This look really cute! In trying to enter text, however, I'm finding I'm not able to rotate the text boxes on the Friday and Sunday pages to sit right. Any tips on how to do this?
