Using Vintage Accesories

With one or two unexpected accessories, you can transform your bathroom into more than just a perfunctory corner of your home. Vintage pieces found at tag sales and antiques shops can easily be adapted to serve imaginative new purposes. An old breadbasket can hold sponges, and a reconditioned medical cabinet can store towels and other bathroom items.

Barbara Sallick, collector and author of "Waterworks" -- a book about designing and decorating bathrooms -- regularly scours tag sales and antiques shops across the country for interesting items. Recently, while searching for botanical prints to hang over a bathtub, she stumbled upon an incredible, decorative piece of cast iron, which she decided to use instead. Before deciding on any piece, Barbara recommends asking yourself two questions: Is it well designed, and how will it function in my space?
